5 Things the BEST Parties Have
Have you ever been to a party or hosted one that just seemed to be a bit of a dud? Sometimes, despite the host's best efforts, a party is just a flop, and it's often because some of the smaller details are overlooked. So, we've compiled a list of things that all GREAT parties have! These may not be top of mind when starting the planning process, but these details are sure to help make your party a hit and will help the Host actually enjoy the party.
Give Guests the Run-down
Whether you’re hosting the party at home or at a venue, give guests a quick run-down when they arrive. Let them know where the washrooms are, where they can mix and mingle, when a meal will be served, and where to put gifts. If you’re hosting a party where some of the guests may not know many other people, take a few minutes to introduce them to a couple people you think they’d have a good conversation with.
Serve a Variety of Food
Almost all parties have food of some sort, even if it’s just a couple snacks. But guests often remember the food from parties, and you want them to remember the food for positive reasons, not because there wasn’t enough, it wasn’t served on time, or there were no options they liked! A great party will have a variety of food served! As the host, this may seem like a lot more work, but it can sometimes be the opposite - you don't have to spend time worrying about whether all your guests can eat or will enjoy the main course if you have an array of foods for them to choose from.
If you're hosting a larger party, it can be hard to find the time to grab everyone a drink shortly after they arrive, which is proper host etiquette. Having a drink in hand, of any kind, instantly makes guests feel more comfortable, but if you’re trying to welcome a bunch of guests, put away coats, and give them the run-down, you won’t be able to get a drink in their hand quickly. So, either set-up a self-serve beverage station, designate a helper to grab drinks or for more formal parties, consider hiring a mobile bartender! Make sure you have a couple beverage options, and always make sure you have plenty of water and non-alcoholic options for your guests! Our typical self-serve bar is stocked with red and white wines, lemon water, a couple craft beers and pop or flavoured sparkling water.
Have you ever been to a party where there is no background noise at all? Music is so important to setting the mood and creating the ambience you’ve intended to. You don’t need a live band or loud music, but an intentional playlist in the background will help take away the awkwardness of breaks in the conversations and is also a great conversation starter.
Have you been to a party where the décor was distracting - like you had to take half the décor off the table just to be able to eat? Or maybe you’ve planned a party where the décor just fell short, it didn’t tie the theme together, the décor might have been sparse or just not well planned. Plan your décor in advance to make sure it aligns with the theme but will flow well with the space and type of party too.
